# Billing

Zata.ai follows a **prepaid monthly billing** model, where customers pay in advance for a fixed amount of storage. Every subscription is valid for **30 days**, regardless of the calendar month, providing predictable billing and transparent pricing.

### Billing Cycle

* All subscriptions are billed **monthly**.
* One billing month is always **30 days**.
* The billing cycle begins on the **date of payment**.

### Subscription Lifecycle

If a subscription is not renewed, the account progresses through the following stages:

| Stage | Duration | Description |
| --------------------- | -------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Active** | 30 days | All services function normally. |
| **Grace Period** | 5 days after expiry | Services continue to operate, allowing time to renew without interruption. |
| **Retention** | Up to 90 days after expiry | The account is suspended and cannot be accessed, but all stored data is safely retained. Renewing the subscription restores access. |
| **Deletion Deletion** | After 90 days | If a subscription is not renewed within 90 days of its expiry, all stored data is permanently deleted. |

### Renewing a Subscription

Customers can renew their subscription during the **last 5 days** of the current billing period or any time after it expires. The following scenarios demonstrate how renewals, late payments, and plan upgrades & downgrades are handled under Zata.ai's billing system:

### 1. Renew Before Expiry

If the same plan is renewed before expiry:

* The new subscription is added after the current billing period.
* No remaining subscription days are lost.
* The next 30-day billing period starts immediately after the current one ends.

### 2. Renew After Expiry

If payment is made after the subscription has expired:

* A **Data Retention Fee** is charged for the number of days between the expiry date and the payment date.
* The fee is calculated using the plan's daily rate.

**Daily Rate = Monthly Plan Price ÷ 30**

After payment:

* A new 30-day subscription begins from the **payment date**.
* The Data Retention Fee is displayed as a separate line item on the invoice.

The Data Retention Fee may be charged for a maximum of **90 days** after the subscription expires.

### 3. Upgrading a Storage Plan

Customers can upgrade to a larger storage plan at any time.

When upgrading:

* The unused value of the current subscription is converted into credit.
* The credit is automatically deducted from the price of the new plan.
* A new 30-day billing period starts from the payment date.

This ensures customers only pay for the additional value of the upgraded plan.

### 4. Downgrading a Storage Plan

Downgrades are **not permitted during an active billing period**.

Once the current subscription expires, customers may switch to a smaller plan provided that:

* The total stored data fits within the storage capacity of the selected plan.

### Free Trial

Every new account receives a **15-day free trial** with access to all available storage locations.

If a paid subscription is not purchased, the account is suspended after the trial ends.

### Important Notes

* Billing is prepaid and charged monthly.
* Every billing period is exactly **30 days**.
* Renewing before expiry extends the subscription without losing any remaining days.
* Renewing after expiry starts a new 30-day billing period from the payment date and includes a Data Retention Fee for the unpaid days.
* Upgrading a plan immediately starts a new billing period, with unused subscription value automatically applied as credit.
* Stored data is never deleted immediately after expiry. Data becomes eligible for deletion only after **90 days**, and cannot be retrieved.
